William Wordsworth wrote the first great poetic autobiography and ushered in the Romantic era. He was the first to suggest that places of outstanding natural beauty should become what he called ‘a sort of national property’. He pioneered ways of thinking about childhood, the self, our connection to the natural world, and the purpose of poetry. And though he retreated from radical politics and into an imaginative world within, his influence endures to this day. This new biography has been published to mark the 250th anniversary of his birth.
