COMPELLED BY MEMORY: THE LEWIS LAND MONUMENTS

On the Isle of Lewis, five powerful, award-winning monuments commemorate the island’s Land Heroes. Their courageous struggle for land law reform safeguarded the Gaelic-speaking community which endures on Lewis to this day. The intention of this book is twofold: through the photography of Robin Gillanders, the design, setting and materials of these ‘sentinels in stone’ are portrayed; and essays by distinguished Scottish art historians, and Gaelic-speaking island historian Dr Joni Buchanan, tell the vivid story of the events commemorated by each monument and examine their iconography.
