COFFIN ROADS: JOURNEYS TO THE WEST

The 'coffin roads' of the Highlands and Islands were the routes along which bodies were carried for burial. This book journeys along eight coffin roads to discover and explore the distinctive traditions, beliefs and practices around dying, death and mourning in the communities which created and used them. It also considers whether the distinctive West Highland and Hebridean way of death offers something helpful and important to us today. Routes covered include Kilmartin, the Street of the Dead on Iona, and the Green Isle in Loch Shiel.
