Roger Deakin, author of Waterlog, was a man of many parts: maverick adman, cider-maker, teacher, environmentalist, music promoter and filmmaker. But above all, he was the restorer of Walnut Tree Farm in Suffolk, the heartland where he wrote about nature with rare attention, intimacy, precision and poetry. Patrick Barkham’s creative biography is told primarily in the words of Deakin himself, taken from notebooks, diaries, letters and recordings, with material from a chorus of friends, family, colleagues and lovers.
