Description
One of Scotland's finest athletes, Eric Liddle was feted throughout the United Kingdom. He famously refused to run in the 100-meter sprint at the 1924 Summer Olympics, despite being tipped for a gold medal, because it took place on a Sunday. Instead, he competed in the 400-metre race on a weekday and won a gold anyway. At the height of his fame, he slipped out of the limelight to become a missionary in China, where he later came to an unpleasant end in a Japanese internment camp.
