George Mikes was born in Hungary in 1912. In 1938 he was sent to London for a couple of weeks by his newspaper to cover the Munich Crisis; he ended up staying there for the rest of his life, and became popular for his affectionate and satiric writing on the peculiar nature of the British. Delving into important matters such as the weather, tea, not being clever (which is considered bad manners), queueing (the national passion), scrupulous politeness and much more, this book is both a closely-observed portrait of a nation's habits and a comic classic.
