Description
A brutal triple murder in a remote north-western crofting community at Applecross in 1869 leads to the arrest of a young man by the name of Roderick Macrae. One of the victims is the village constable; the other two are strangers. There's no question that Macrae is guilty, but the police and courts must uncover what drove him to commit his crimes. His fate rests on one key question: is he insane? A historical thriller ingeniously told through the devices of Macrae's memoir, the trial transcripts and newspaper reports.
