CAIRNGORMS: LANDSCAPES IN STONE

The geology of the Cairngorms stretches back hundreds of millions of years. Much of the land is based on granite that formed deep within the Earth’s crust and ‘surfaced’ as the overlying layers of rock were stripped away by ice, wind and water. With 18 Munros, the area attracts climbers and walkers who fancy a challenge, while the native plants and animals need to be hardy to survive the severe winter conditions.
