Author and scientist, environmental philosopher and pioneer of conservation, John Muir is a hero in both his native Scotland and his adopted home of the United States. He founded the Sierra Club, is regarded as the father of the National Parks in America, was an early proponent of the theory of glaciation, and published over 300 articles and 12 books during his lifetime, despite finding writing intensely tiresome and worryingly inadequate for what he wished to convey.
